My first chapter critique service offers nearly all the services as a full manuscript critique, while only looking at the most important part of your book: the first chapter. This service can be applied to up to the first 4,000 words of your manuscript and includes an evaluation report (generally about 5 pages long) in which I evaluate and detail issues in your first chapter's conflict, plot development, pacing, point of view/perspective, and character development.
I also address any issues I see in the first five pages, and in a section titled Turning the Page, I explain (based on the current state of the first chapter) if the reader is interested enough to continue on to Chapter 2.
In the first chapter critique process, I write on the manuscript itself and address issues that I may have as a first-time reader (for example, pointing out something that is too vague, inconsistent, etc.). I also recommend next steps for your manuscript—if you should proceed with publishing your book, or if it needs proofreading, line editing, etc.
In the first chapter critique process, I do not do any editing or ghostwriting of any kind.
Please read my guide for information on sample edits, editing packages, rush project options, and the scheduling process.
